"Shiki" ends with the village of Sotoba practically decimated after the battle between humans and the beings called Shiki. The story culminates in the destruction of many Shiki at the hands of the surviving villagers, who, driven by fear and desperation, take drastic measures to eradicate the vampires. The character Natsuno, who had been transformed into a Shiki, allies himself with the humans to put an end to the killing, sacrificing himself in the process. However, the battle leaves deep scars, both physical and emotional, on the survivors, showing that, in the end, there are no clear winners, only a village devastated by both the nature of the Shiki and the savagery revealed within the humans themselves.
