In "Kashi no Ki Mokku" (better known as "The Tree of My Friend" or "The Wooden Puppet"), the end of the story differs slightly depending on the version of the work. In the original version of Tsuboi Sakae's work, published in 1939, Mokku, the living wooden puppet, ends up sacrificing himself to save the boy Japeto from a fire. The tree from which Mokku was carved ends up blooming as a sign of life and hope, showing that Mokku's sacrifice was not in vain.
